Dano Festivals

D
ano is the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar and is a day farmers pray before meeting the summer so that they may earn a good harvest in the fall. This year the third biggest national holiday, after New Year's Day and Chuseok, falls on June 25.

The Gangneung Dano Festival consists of a ceremony praying to the mountain gods, sansinje, and various traditional games, like ssireum competitions, mask plays, nongak performances, and also one of the most famous Dano specialties; riding on a swing. The feast will be headed by Namdaecheon in Gangneung, Gangwon Province from June 23 through June 27.

The Beopseong Dano Festival (http://www.danoje.co.kr/) will be held in Beopseong-myeon at Yeonggwang-gun, Jeonnam Province from June 24 to June 26. What is special about the Beopseong Dano festival is that the prayer is given to the sea gods for a good year of yellow corbina, for which fish Yeonggwang is famous.

The Gyeongsan Dano Festival (http://dano.wo.ro/) at Jain commemorates General Han who protected the Kingdom of Silla from invaders and thanks to his bravery left many legends. Jain Jeonsan Girl¡¯s High School will hold the feast from June 24 through June 26.
