Walking Tour

Changgyeong-gung

Y
ou can reach Changgyeong-gung by walking a short distance from Hyehwa station. Exit the station through gate 3 and walk along the road in the direction of Seoul National University hospital. It will take about 15 minutes. Changgyeong-gung, known as one of the five great palaces of the Joseon period (1392~1910), used to have magnificent features. However, during the Japanese colonization (1910~1945) the palace was reconstructed as a park by establishing a zoo, garden and museum in it. Changgyeong-gung was restored to its original condition back in 1983. This superb park has a big forest in which about 50,000 trees of 165 different species grow showing the beauty of Korea. It's closed on Tuesdays.

Sungkyunkwan University, Jonkyeong-gak and Sungkyunkwan

Jonkyeong-gak and Sungkyunkwan, on the campus of Sungkyunkwan University,
are only a 10-minute walk from Changgyeong-gun. Sungkyunkwan was founded in 1398 as a National University during the reign of the Joseon Dynasty's first king, Taejo. Its original purpose was to teach Confucianism, which was a national subject of study at that time. Today, it is continuing its legacy as Sungkyunkwan University. Since 1992 it has been operating a class in Korean courtesy. Anyone can learn appropriate ways of bowing, dressing in the national clothes, drinking tea, and many other subjects related to traditional courtesies. You will also be given a chance to learn about traditional games and how to play them.

Marronnier Park

Another 15-minute walk from Sungkyunkwan University brings you to Marronnier Park. You can also find it by taking subway line 4 to Hyehwa station and exiting through gate 2. Marronnier Park is a place for the young generation and many performances and events take place around the park, keeping it crowded every weekend. New and fresh songs by amateur singers are performed on the outdoor stage, and street artists under the trees draw pictures of the visitors.

Dongdaemun
(The East gate of Seoul is designated as Cultural Treasure No. 1)

To arrive at Dongdaemun, you have to walk toward Ewha Woman's University hospital for approximately 20 minutes. If you choose to take a taxi, it will cost around W1,300 won (less than US$1.3). Dongdaemun, built during the reign of the Joseon Dynasty's first King, Taejo is the East gate of the ancient walls around Seoul, as well as Cultural Treasure No. 1. It symbolizes the spreading love for others toward the outside world. Architecturally, it represents the style of the late Joseon period, since it was restored in the mid 19th century.

Dongdaemun Market
(Shopping Mecca that creates the latest fashion styles)

The whole area surrounding Dongdaemun is known as Dongdaemun Market. After passing under the elevated road on the left side of Dongdaemun, you will find Doosan Tower, Migliore and Designer Club. In addition to these, there are Dongdaemun general market, and Pyeonghwa, Gwangjang and Heung-in Markets, which make Dondaemun a very special shopping place.
