스웨덴 관광 단체들은 2만5000여명의 성에 굶주린 여성 레즈비언들만 산다는 한 마을에 대한(over a Swedish town inhabited only by 25,000 sex-mad lesbians) 중국 남성들의 문의가 밀어닥쳐 정신을 차리지 못하고(be swamped with queries from Chinese men) 있다.
중국의 대표적 통신사(the leading Chinese news agency)인 신화의 보도에 따르면 스웨덴에 있는 ‘차코 폴 시티’라는 신비한 마을(the mysterious ‘Chako Paul City’ in Sweden)은 1820년 남자를 증오하는 한 부유한 과부에 의해 스웨덴 북부 삼림지대에 만들어졌다고(be said to have been founded by a wealthy, man-hating widow in 1820 in the northern Swedish woods) 한다. 마을 입구에는(at the entrance of the town) 한 쌍의 금발 여성 보초들(a pair of blonde female sentries)이 지키고 있으며(stand guard), 여기에 들어가기를 원하는 남자들(men wishing to enter)은 경찰에 의해 ‘반쯤 죽을 정도’로 두들겨 맞는 위험을 감수해야(have to risk being beaten ‘half to death’ by police) 한다는 것.
신화통신은 이어 모두 여성인 주민들의 상당수(much of the all-female population)는 임업에 종사하고(be employed in the forestry industry) 있으며, 대부분 목공 도구들이 가득한 두꺼운 허리 벨트를 차고 있다는(sport a thick waist belt full of woodworking equipment) 설명도 곁들였다.
또 마을에 남성들이 없다 보니 여성 동성연애가 만연해 있다면서(lesbianism runs rampant), 하지만 남자에 굶주린 여성 주민들(the man-starved women residents)은 남자 애인과의 밀회를 위해 마을 경계 밖으로 나가도록 허락을 받을(be allowed to leave the Swedish city limits for trysts with male lovers) 수 있다고 소개했다.
대신 남자와의 성적 욕구를 채우기 위해 마을을 나가기로 결정한(decide to leave the town to fulfill their sexual needs with men) 여성들은 예외 없이 목욕을 한다는 데 동의하는 경우에 한해(if they agree to bathe without exception) 마을 복귀를 허용한다고(be only allowed to return to the city) 한다. 또 마을의 다른 여성들의 정신 상태에 부정적 영향을 미치지 않도록(do not negatively affect the mental state of other women in the town) 준비된 다른 조치들도 이행해야(undertake other measures) 한다고 통신은 덧붙였다.
이 소식이 전해지자 눈을 부릅뜬 수 백만 명의 남성들(millions of goggle-eyed men)이 그 마을 여성들에 관해 읽어보고 그 곳에 가는 방법을 알아보려고 몰려들면서(flock to read up on the town’s women and try to find out to get there) 중국 인터넷 업체들은 마비 상태에 빠졌다(cripple China’s internet providers).
스웨덴 관광 전문가들(Swedish travel experts)에게는 그 섹시한 마을에 대한 문의가 쇄도하고(be deluged with inquiries about the sexy city) 있다. 하지만 현지 당국 대변인(local authorities’ spokesman)인 클레이스 버틸슨은 “어디서 그런 얘기가 나왔는지 모르겠다(have no idea where this came from)”며 “어쨌든 사실이 아니다”고 말하고 있다. “180년 이상 그와 같은 것을 비밀로 유지할 수 있다는(keep something like that a secret for more than 180 years) 것 자체가 말이 안 되지 않느냐”고 반문한다.
그러나 이러한 현지 당국의 공식 부인에도 불구하고 신비한 마을에 대한 중국 남성들의 열정은 좀처럼 가라앉지 않고(do not dampen Chinese men’s enthusiasm for the mysterious town) 있다.
