잭슨의 급작스러운 죽음(Jackson’s sudden death)은 그의 건강 병력에 대한 즉각적인 의문들을 불러일으켰다(raise immediate questions about the singer’s health history). 하지만 그의 진료기록에 대해선 알려진 것이 거의 없다(little is known about his medical record). 언제나 소문과 억측들로 특징 지어지는 미스테리로 남아있었다(have always been a mystery characterized by rumors and speculation).
‘스릴러’ ‘빌리진’ 등 히트곡을 낸 슈퍼스타(the superstar behind hits such as Thriller, Billie Jean and so on) 잭슨은 종종 그의 여러가지 건강 문제들을 둘러싼 의혹을 불러일으켰고, 그리고는 피해갔다(spar, then dodge, questions surrounding his various health problems).
특히 수술 마스크를 쓰거나 휠체어를 타고 대중 앞에 나타나(appear in public wearing surgical masks or in a wheelchair) 의혹을 증폭시키곤 했다. 그 때마다 그는 매우 수척해 있었고, 연약해 보였다(be thin and appear frail).
의혹은 그의 경력 초기부터 시작(begin early in his career)됐다. 대부분 그의 성형수술을 둘러싼(mostly surrounding his plastic surgery) 것들이었다. 잭슨은 결코 시인하려 하지 않았으나(would never admit to them)들은 계속해서 잭슨의 기이하게 빛나는 피부색을 찍어대곤(continue to take snapshots of his oddly lightening skin color) 했다.
결국 잭슨은 자신이 백반증(白斑症)을 앓고(suffer from vitiligo) 있다고 인정했다. 피부의 색소 세포가 파괴돼(pigment cells in the skin are destroyed) 하얀 반점을 남기는(leave white patches) 피부 질병(a skin disorder)이었다.
잭슨은 지난 1984년 펩시콜라 광고 촬영 중(during the filming of a Pepsi commercial) 머리카락에 불이 붙어(his hair accidentally catches fire) 2도 화상을 입은 뒤(after receiving second-degree burns) 병원에 입원했었다.
잭슨은 당시 회복 기간에 고압 산소 방을 사용한 것으로 전해졌으며(reportedly use a hyperbaric oxygen chamber) 노화과정을 중단시키기 위해(in an effort to halt the aging process) 잠도 그 방에서 잔 것으로 알려지고(allegedly also sleep in the chamber) 있다. 1986년엔 고압 산소방에 누워있는 그의 사진들(photos of him lying in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber)이 외부로 누출(be leaked)되기도 했다.
지난해 크리스마스 무렵(around Christmas of last year) 잭슨의 전기를 쓰고 있던 한 영국 기자(a British journalist working on a biography of the pop star)는 잭슨이 폐와 간에 영향을 주는 유전병(a genetic condition that affects the lungs and liver)인 알파-1 항트립신 결핍증을 앓고(suffer from alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency) 있다고 폭로한 바 있다.
당시 작가이자 저널리스트인 이안 핼퍼린은 ‘인 터치’라는 잡지를 통해 “잭슨은 폐 이식수술을 받아야(need a lung transplant) 한다”며 “잭슨은 내장 부분에서 출혈을 하고(be bleeding in the intestines) 있다”고 주장했었다. 그는 또 잭슨의 왼쪽 눈이 보이지 않으며(cannot see out of his left eye) 숨이 차서 대개는 거의 말을 하지 못할(be so winded that he can barely speak most of the time) 정도라고 밝혔다.
이에 대해 잭슨의 대변인(Jackson’s spokesperson)은 건강문제를 강력히 부인(resolutely deny the health problems)하면서 “소문들은 완전히 날조된 것(be a tatal fabrication)이며 잭슨은 건강이 양호한(be in fine health) 상태”라고 주장했었다.
최근 잭슨은 3년간 공백을 깨고 복귀 투어를 준비 중(be preparing for a comeback tour)이었다. 그러나 런던 공연 계획(plans for his London shows)이 지난 5월 연기되면서(be postponed in May) 잭슨이 병 들었다는 소문들이 다시 일었고(rumors emerge again), 이번엔 그 병이 피부암(a skin cancer)이라는 설이 파다했다(be widely rumored).
이와 관련, 공연 주최 측은 “일정 변경(the change in schedule)이 잭슨의 건강과는 전혀 관계가 없다(have absolutely nothing to do with Jackson’s health)”며 언론을 통해 재삼재사 부인(deny the rumors repeatedly in the press)했었다.
잭슨의 갑작스러운 심장질환 사망(Jackson’s sudden cardiac death)이 과거 질병들과 어떤 관계가 있는지는(have any relation to past conditions) 아직 확실치 않다. 잭슨에 대한 부검(an autopsy)은 26일(현지시각) 있을 예정(be expected to occur on June 26)이다.
